Tofino Fishing Report | March 2012 | Cleanline Sportfishing | Tofino, B.C.

Well the pleasant weather we’ve been experiencing on the West Coast of Vancouver Island lately could fool anyone that it was summer already! Calm seas and light winds has triggered some early season fishing in the Tofino area, where we’ve been producing some fantastic Chinook, Halibut and Crab fishing. If this is any sign of what we’re expecting for the summer, we’re already off to an incredible start!

Over the last few of weeks Cleanline has been fishing quite regularly offshore in the Portland Point and Three Humps areas where the salmon ‘bite’ over a favorable slack tide has produced numerous early migrating chinook salmon in the 8 to 17 lb range. If the wind kicks up, the fishing zones a mere 10 minute boat ride from the Trilogy Dock have been producing as well with a larger size average along the outer reefs such as Wilf Rock, and Moser Point. Our first attempt at targeting halibut proved successful drift fishing a few miles off Leonard light house producing a nice 40 lb fish using a spreader bar technique with Power Bait white grubs, the local secret! Salmon fishing has been very productive on the troll, fishing right on the bottom in our offshore locations using anchovies and a variety of needle fish patterns that also work for halibut while trolling for salmon!

There have been numerous reports of record returns for Chinook salmon heading back to the Western US and we’ve been experiencing nearly 100% retention of hatchery Chinook which seems to correlate with all the latest reports. If this keeps up we’ll been in for one of the most consistent fishing seasons in a long time.

Our Wilderness River Drift proved very successful on the Steelhead front where we hosted vancouverisawesome.com‘s Bob Kronbauer along with famed Tofino photographer Jeremykoreski.com for an incredible day fly fishing on our exclusive remote river system. Stay tuned for Bob’s article and more of Jer’s photos!

What they are Saying

Our family went out with Blake for the day in late July and we had a blast! Caught our limit of Halibut and Chinook salmon. Even got 4 crabs from the traps. Blake is an excellent guide who knows where the fish are and how to catch them. Came home with 130 lbs of tasty fish. I would recommend Blake and Cleanline charters to anyone wanting a good time fishing out of Tofino. Trip of a lifetime for sure.
