Tofino Fishing Report – March 2014

Posted on: March 25th, 2014 by Blake Klopfenstein

Tofino Fishing for Spot PrawnsAs weather and sea conditions have gradually improved, so have our opportunities to head offshore. Post herring spawn, and the start of early running Columbia River Chinook salmon has triggered the start of Tofino’s offshore fishery. Good numbers of Chinook salmon, 8-15 pounds, have been hooked and landed in our regular offshore fishing venues such as Portland point. Fishing deep is always the key in early season, and while water clarity is pristine at the moment, bringing one side a little further up during a slack tide can trigger some ambitious biters! Trolling anchovies and our staple translucent needlefish hoochie paterns at this time of year are a must.

Halibut opened early this year, on February 1, but sea conditions have prevented us from targeting them specifically until lately. Try the old standby white Power Bait, and as always octopus and salmon belly if you can get you hands on any!

Prawns and crabs have been plentiful all winter long and our winter fishing guests can attest to that! Prawn and crab fishing in Tofino can be done in pretty much any weather, having good quality sheltered areas all within 30-40 minute boat ride give us a variety of options. We have had our better success lately in the 300 to 270 feet range of water depth.

What they are Saying

This is a blast. Blake is the perfect host, the boat is very well equipped and you feel safe in his hands. We spent a few hours going far up Clayquot Sound, pulled some crab traps, some prawn traps, and took in the incredible views. I highly recommend this kind of adventure. If you’re not into fishing, don’t worry because the crabbing and prawning are a blast and the scenery is breathtaking. Blake’s knowledge of the area add that much more to an already excellent time.
