Lifestyle for many on the West Coast of Vancouver Island reveals a unique connection to local food sources, sustainable harvest and a way of life close to the ocean. Although residents of the small coastal town of Tofino commit to wicked winter storms and over 10 feet in annual precipitation, this unique lifestyle is what keeps locals progressively active amidst temperamental coastal weather. Offering year round access to nutritious fish and seafood, the philosophies of the Slow Food movement is ever-present in everyday life in this small west coast town.

The Slow Food movement began in the late 1980’s and was first created to resist the expansion of fast food popularity and to promote healthy traditional food systems, regional cuisine, all the while maintaining a balance of environmental consciousness and sourcing locally produced or harvested food. Year round activities in Tofino often involve a variety of sustainable seafood harvesting pursuits. Access to the water via boat or beach offers an abundance of seafood gathering and fishing opportunities and meal planning is often the center of this pursuit. The key is sourcing local opportunities and one should feel extremely fortunate to never be too far away from a meal in this part of the world. Whether it’s secret oyster beaches, local year-round fishing for spot prawns, dungeoness crab or winter chinook salmon, the ocean close by offers a world of opportunities and the ‘Slow Food Movement‘ may be more aptly described as ‘Slow Fish’ in the hearts of Westcoasters.

Our family went out with Blake for the day in late July and we had a blast! Caught our limit of Halibut and Chinook salmon. Even got 4 crabs from the traps. Blake is an excellent guide who knows where the fish are and how to catch them. Came home with 130 lbs of tasty fish.
