Well it’s seems like the fishing season in Tofino is now into full swing, experiencing peak season caliber fishing for Chinook salmon and halibut. The Chinook fishing with combined calm weather has been exceptional lately, in our Portland Point areas 5-7 miles off shore. There has been a huge abundance of large schooling Krill where we’ve been finding cruising Chinook gorging themselves and biting at anything in their path! Chinook have been ranging anywhere from 13-28 pounds and offer plenty of fight, hitting anywhere from bottom depths to mid water 100 feet zones as well. Popular set-ups still include flasher and anchovy combinations as well as a variety of needle-fish hoochies that still provide appropriate immitation of stranded Krill and needle fish action.

Coho salmon are starting to show up in good numbers in our offshore waters and a few trickling in to the inside waters of Clayoquot Sound. For our fly fishing enthusiasts this is exceptional news as we’re expecting Coho salmon in the millions to arrive very soon! Some of the largest halibut of the season have been taken in the month of June as the large ‘roamers’ cruise the shelf in the 7-10 mile zone, ranging in sizes from 40 -60 pounds. With the new regulation in place for release of halibut over 126cm, measuring and ethical release is critical this season, when appropriate, to minimize incidental mortality of the larger female breeders. Try circle hooks with bait, or with power baits, try using a large single octopus hook in the top of the grub to ensure high chance of ‘lip-hooked’ halibut.

We had an amazing family experience with Cleanline Fishing! Blake knew just how to keep the interest of our 2 and 4 year old as we pulled up all sorts of sea creatures in the crab traps.
